Internal Medicine
The history of internal medicine is the history of medical science. Internal medicine is the principal and broadest branch of clinical medicine. It studies diseases of the internal organs and systems, their causes, development and manifestations, their diagnosis, and their successful treatment. Internal medicine was a principal branch of what was once a unified medical science. Infectious diseases, pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, endocrinology, and other fields gradually emerged from it as independent disciplines. The specialty of Internal Medicine includes three sections: => The first is internal medicine propaedeutics, i.e. the examination of the patient. => The second is the clinical practice of internal medicine. It studies the causes of diseases, their course, characteristic symptoms, diagnostic methods, and principal forms of treatment. => The third is the therapy (treatment) of internal diseases. The term therapy derives from the Greek word therapeia, meaning treatment. This section of internal medicine focuses on comprehensive treatment of the affected organ or system, as well as other organs and systems affected to a greater or lesser extent. Therapy uses a broad range of treatments: medicines, chemotherapeutic agents, immunotherapy, physiotherapy, sanatorium and spa treatment, therapeutic nutrition, herbal therapy, and others. A physician who practices internal medicine is called an internal medicine physician or internist.
